LET’S MAKE WATER/FUEL LEVEL INDICATOR
We were getting bored and so we decided to make a simple project which will help us understand how the fuel or water level indicators work. We have often seen that in cars when the fuel goes down a certain level an indication comes on telling us that we need to refill the fuel. The same way we have a water level indicator which tells us when to fill up a tank or whether the water has reached the maximum level.
FIRST THE EXPERIMENT
What will you need?
A bottle
Few LED’s ( depends how many levels of warning signals you want to create)
A wire ( you can also use the paper clip, safety pin etc basically anything that conducts electricity)
Alligator clips, Aluminium Foil and
3V battery and battery holder
As a first step Make holes in the bottle ( you can use a needle to poke holes)
Insert LED’s in the holes (positive end) except for one which is near bottom
This is how the LED’s have to be fixed on the bottle (+ve side inside and -ve side should be bent and on top of the bottle)
Remember that the positive side of LED is the longer side
Now in the bottom hole attach a wire or a straightened out paper clip. The positive side of LED should be in the bottle and the negative should be outside
Ensure that your LED ends that are out side the bottle (-ve )terminal should all touch the aluminium foil. Aluminium foil is used as it is a conductor of electricity.
The next step is to attach the alligator clips. attach one allegator clip to the Aluminium foil and the other one to the wire that we had fixed in the bottom of the bottle.
This is how your experiment will look like once you have made all the connections. Once you have connected the alligator clips fill the bottle with water. Attach it with the battery you will see that the LED’s may/may not glow weakly..( this is dependent on the type of water thats there in your area)
The glow of LED when salt is mixed in water.. why this happens??
For electricity to travel through a liquid, a movement of charge must take place through the liquid. In tap water, rainwater and seawater, there are countless impurities, such as salt (Na+), calcium (Ca 2+), and magnesium (Mg2+) ions (source). Because these are charged, when they move through water, electricity is able to flow through the liquid. In distilled water, however, there are no impurities and therefore no ions. There are only neutral molecules, and these neutral molecules don’t have any charge. For that reason, distilled water is unable to conduct electricity.

PURPOSE OF WATER LEVEL INDICATOR
The purpose of a water level indicator is to figure out and manage water levels in a water tank. Else we have seen that motors are left on and the water once full continues to flow.. Imagine the amount of watage we will be sav ing The control panel can also be programmed to automatically turn on a water pump once levels get too low and refill the water back to the adequate level.
HOW IT WORKS
The working principle of a water level indicator is actually quite simple. Water level indicators work by using sensor probes to indicate water levels in a storage tank. These probes send information back to the control panel to trigger an alarm or indicator. As mentioned above, the control panel can be programmed to automatically turn on your pump to refill the water again.
- The water level is full – Nothing happens
- Water level drops to the reference probe – Alarm is triggered
- Fill start is triggered automatically turning on the water to fill the tank
- Once the water is full, fill stop is triggered and the system automatically stops the pump
- The system resets and waits for water levels to drop again
APPLICATIONS OF A WATER LEVEL INDICATOR
Water level indicators can be used in Hotels, Pools, Factories, fire protection systems in buildings and more. Other applications and uses of a water level indicator include:
- Hotels
- Home apartments
- Commercial complexes
- Factories
- Where cooling towers are used
- Residential and commercial swimming pools
- In vehicles as a fuel level indicator
- In huge containers as a liquid level indicator
- submersibles
- Open wells
- Bore wells
- Sump Pumps
- Used to start and stop water pumps
- water level indicator for water tank
IMPORTANCE OF WATER LEVEL INDICATORS
Water level indicators are important for many different industries. For example, cooling towers use water level indicators to monitor water levels in a tank and make corrective actions based on the level of water. Without water level indicators in a water tank, you would have to manually check whether enough water is in the tank, and should your tank ever go empty, it could mean your chiller overheating. Water level indicators allow you to remotely monitor water levels and make corrective actions automatically so you can focus on more important issues.
